SRINAGAR: The summer capital radiated festive elegance and spiritual devotion on Friday as Kashmiri Pandits celebrated Sri Krishna Janmashtami with immense piety, traditional rituals, and a grand public procession traversing historical city sectors.

Festivities commenced in the early morning hours across temples that were adorned with marigolds, festive illuminations, and intricate floral canopies. Devotees gathered in large numbers to observe customary fasts, perform morning aarti, and participate in resonant day-long bhajan-kirtan sessions.

The centerpiece of the day’s observances was the traditional Shobha Yatra, a sacred procession undertaken with great emotional and spiritual reverence. Originating from the historic Ganpatyar Temple located in Tankipora, Habba Kadal, the yatra wove through downtown lanes before moving into uptown Srinagar.

Chants in praise of Lord Krishna, rhythmic beating of drums, and traditional devotional songs filled the air as the procession progressed along Kralkhud, Barbarshah, and Regal Chowk, eventually converging at the commercial hub of Lal Chowk.

At the landmark Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), the yatra evolved into an expressive cultural assembly. Devotees joined in devotional choreographies, singing folk hymns while carrying decorative idols and saffron pennants. Children outfitted in customary Kashmiri attire added charm to the procession, with several youngsters personifying young Krishna and Radha.

In a showcase of enduring inter-community camaraderie, local Muslim residents lined parts of the route to welcome the procession, exchanging greetings and sharing warm wishes with their Pandit brethren—reaffirming the civilizational ethos of Kashmiriyat.

The religious gathering concluded with the sharing of festive delicacies and the distribution of prasad among community members and visitors. To ensure the smooth and undisturbed passage of the celebration, civil and police authorities deployed thorough security measures and coordinated traffic management along the entire procession corridor.
