TASHKENT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Uzbek capital on Saturday to embark on a vital two-nation bilateral visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, reinforcing New Delhi’s outreach to its extended northern neighbourhood and expanding its strategic footprint across Central Asia.

In a distinctive diplomatic gesture underscoring the deep mutual respect between the two nations, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally received Prime Minister Modi upon his arrival late Saturday evening. Expressing gratitude for the grand welcome, PM Modi termed this fourth visit to Uzbekistan an indicator of the enduring momentum and growing warmth in bilateral ties.

Economic Alignment and Strategic Priorities

During his engagements in Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi will lead extensive delegation-level talks with President Mirziyoyev. The bilateral dialogue focuses on diversifying economic engagement beyond traditional commodities into pharmaceuticals, critical minerals extraction (such as copper and uranium), information technology, and renewable energy.

With over 400 Indian enterprises operating in Uzbekistan across sectors worth upwards of $5 billion, both administrations are exploring frameworks to ease market access, eliminate non-tariff hurdles, and streamline multi-modal cargo transit. Defence relations, underscored by regular joint drills including the Dustlik military exercises, will also be reviewed.

Next Destination: 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek

Following the conclusion of his bilateral programmes in Tashkent on August 30, Prime Minister Modi will head to Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov.

In Bishkek, the Prime Minister will participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31–September 1, marking the silver jubilee of the regional multilateral grouping. On the margins of the summit, PM Modi is slated to engage in key bilateral discussions with regional heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, while articulating India’s security and connectivity framework anchored in counter-terrorism, sovereignty, and shared economic opportunity.
