SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated Srinagar’s first Waste to Wonder–Flower Garden and the accompanying Floriculture Mela at Floriculture Park, Polo View. The initiative highlights how discarded materials can be creatively repurposed through reuse and recycling to establish sustainable public spaces.
Highlights of the Floriculture Mela & Exhibition
- Diverse Horticultural Exhibits: The Chief Minister inspected numerous stalls set up by growers and farmers from various Kashmir districts. The exhibits featured:
- Ornamental nurseries and interior herbal plants
- Pots, terrariums, cut flowers, and floral gifts
- Floral décor, event management services, and specialized machinery
- Products from J&K Agros
- Commercial Opportunities: Interacting with local entrepreneurs and nursery owners, Abdullah praised their innovative business models and encouraged them to expand their footprint in the region’s floriculture sector.
Inside the Waste to Wonder–Flower Garden
- Thematic Model Landscape: Built around the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR), approximately 90% of the materials used to construct the garden come from refurbished and scrapped items rather than fresh procurement.
- Creative Installations: The thematic garden showcases imaginative transformations of waste objects into unique decorative features, including:
- A vintage Ambassador car and a heritage jeep
- A classic Kashmiri tonga and a floral tractor
- A floral scooter, a floral boat, and old tyres
- A repurposed refrigerator integrated into a floral display
- Sustainability Message: Addressing attendees, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of rethinking waste management, pointing out that simple behavioral shifts—such as carrying reusable shopping bags instead of single-use plastics—can drastically reduce urban and rural waste challenges.
- All-Season Floral Design: The garden has been planned to provide a continuous, vibrant bloom from spring through late autumn via careful bloom-succession scheduling.
Future Expansion Plans
Chief Minister Abdullah noted that learnings from the initial season of the local Chrysanthemum Garden will be used to enhance future displays, drawing comparisons to the phased evolution of Srinagar’s iconic Tulip Garden. Furthermore, he suggested that the Department of Floriculture study similar attractions in cities like Chandigarh to explore expanding the Waste to Wonder concept as a major tourism draw in Jammu and Kashmir.
The inauguration was attended by several dignitaries, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary Culture Brij Mohan Sharma, Commissioner Secretary Floriculture Zubair Ahmad, and Director Floriculture Kashmir Mathora Masoom.
