KATHUA: In an eye-opening exposure to the transformative agricultural and scientific landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, a visiting press delegation from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, toured the Industrial Biotech Park (IBTP) in Kathua on Thursday. The fact-finding mission spotlighted how pioneering scientific innovations from laboratories are directly enhancing rural livelihoods, nurturing startup ventures, and revolutionising agrarian economics.
Facilitated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Jammu, the delegation’s visit marked a key segment of an exhaustive four-day tour. The visiting correspondents engaged directly with scientists and technologists from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), observing first-hand the synergy driving the Purple Revolution, state-of-the-art incubation units, and next-generation enterprise development.
The Purple Revolution: Fueling a Multi-Crore Aromatic Economy
Briefing the delegation on the remarkable strides made under the Aroma and Floriculture Missions, Dr. Suphla B. Gupta, Nodal Scientist for the Aroma Mission, delineated the institute’s extensive partnership with local cultivators for the promotion of aromatic and medicinal cash crops. She explained how targeted scientific interventions—from high-yielding planting material to rigorous processing—have transformed regional agriculture.
Dr. Gupta explained that the mission moves beyond basic crop production through a complete farm-to-market architecture. By equipping growers with indigenous distillation units and refining systems, farmers have evolved into dynamic agri-preneurs capable of high-value extraction, custom packaging, and direct market monetization. She also highlighted integrated farming models, noting that introducing apiculture alongside aromatic fields simultaneously strengthens ecological pollination and supplies valuable supplementary income.

Scientist-F Dr. Amit Nargotra presented insights into the integration of Artificial Intelligence within biosciences, demonstrating how machine learning algorithms are expediting predictive research and novel technology deployments. The media team subsequently toured the park’s diagnostic laboratories and its sprawling Biofarm, witnessing how applied botanical science transitions seamlessly from controlled testbeds into high-yield open cultivation.
